Tracking Standards for a Performance Marketing Agency

At a German performance marketing agency, I took the event and conversion tracking that was already in place and rebuilt it into best-practice data flows, with every status green.

The Client

A digital marketing agency in Germany with a strong emphasis on performance: its campaigns are judged on the leads and sales they bring in.

For an agency like this, measurement is the foundation of the work. Every campaign decision depends on events and conversions being recorded correctly, and the tracking has to be consistent enough that anyone on the team can read it, trust it and build on it.

The Problem

Event and conversion tracking had been provisioned before I started. It worked, but it had grown over time rather than following one standard:

  • No shared convention: events had been added as they were needed, so they were not all recorded the same way.
  • Conversions without a common rule: the conversion tracking already in place had not been built to one consistent standard.
  • Data flows to verify: not every flow from the tag to the reporting and advertising platforms showed a healthy status.

Tracking without a standard is hard to trust and harder to extend: every new event becomes a fresh decision, and every report needs a second look.

What I Did

I reviewed the existing setup and rebuilt it around clear best practices.

Review the events and conversions already provisioned
   ↓
Define how each event should be recorded
   ↓
Rebuild the data flows to that standard
   ↓
Verify every tag and conversion until the status is green

A review of what existed
I went through the events and conversions that had already been provisioned, to understand what each one measured and where it fell short of a consistent setup.

Best practices for recording events
I defined how events should be recorded, so every event follows the same conventions and means the same thing in every report.

Clean conversion tracking
I reworked the existing conversion tracking to the same standard, so conversions are counted consistently and can be trusted for campaign decisions.

Great flows, all green
I rebuilt the data flows end to end and checked each tag and conversion until every one of them showed a green status.

The Stack

Layer Tool Role
Tag management Google Tag Manager Tags, triggers and variables for every event
Analytics Google Analytics 4 Events recorded to one standard
Advertising Google Ads Conversions counted consistently for campaign decisions

The Result

The agency now has event and conversion tracking that follows one standard from start to finish.

Before After
Events recorded in different ways One best-practice standard for every event
Conversion tracking without a common rule Conversions rebuilt to the same standard
Data flows with unverified status Every flow green, verified end to end

The standard also gives the team a foundation to extend: new events and conversions follow the same rules instead of reinventing the setup each time.

If your tracking has grown without a standard, get in touch.
